Wireless charging pads are convenient devices that use electromagnetic induction to charge compatible electronics without needing to plug a cable into the device itself.
Here is a quick guide to how they work, the main types, and what to look for when buying one.
How Wireless Charging Works
The technology is based on the Qi standard, which is the universal charging protocol used by most major phone brands (Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.).
-
The charging pad (or transmitter) is plugged into a wall outlet and contains an induction coil that creates an electromagnetic field.
-
Your compatible device (or receiver) contains a corresponding coil.
-
When the device is placed on the pad, the electromagnetic field induces a current in the device's coil, which charges the battery.
